49ers QB Trey Lance has broken his ankle and will have surgery at the end of the season

SANTA CLARA, CA (AFP) – San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance will miss the rest of the season after breaking his right ankle on Sunday.

Lance fell after running the ball in the second round of a 27-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks. A cart went out into the field and put Lance’s leg in a pneumatic block before it was dislocated.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that Lance would need to undergo surgery at the end of the season, which raised immediate questions about Lance being used as a runner between interventions often so early in the season.

“Anytime a guy gets hurt, I wish I hadn’t called that,” Shanahan said. “But no, this is something we would have done and something we would continue to do. It’s a football game we believe in and something that gives him a real chance of success.”

His teammates and several Seahawks players paid him respects before he left the field and was replaced by former starter Jimmy Garoppolo, who threw a touchdown pass on his first full drive and made a pass for 154 yards.

It’s hard when you see a man get hurt,” Garoppolo said. “I feel what he feels. You see a tough guy. He will be fine.”

Lance took the starting job this season from Garoppolo after being drafted to third overall in 2021. San Francisco traded three first-round picks to go up nine places to take on Lance, making a major investment in him.

Lance spent his rookie season mostly on the bench watching Garoppolo while the Niners went to an NFC title match before losing to the Rams.

But now he was supposed to get his chance as a rookie for the first time since 2019 in North Dakota. Lance only played one game in college the following season due to the pandemic.

“It’s the worst part of the game, of course,” said Nick Bosa, who picked up a knee injury in the second week of the 2020 season. “It happens right away and there’s no going back. Once that happens, you obviously feel like your life is over for a certain amount of time.” … If he ever had surgery, then he would start this kind of way back. It won’t be easy, but he’ll come back and he’ll be fine. Just really difficult now.”

San Francisco had planned to trade with Garoppolo this season, but was unable to do so after he underwent shoulder surgery in March.

Garoppolo remained on the roster but never trained with the team during training camp, throwing alone on a side field, before agreeing to return as backup on a reduced contract.

Instead of the $24.2 million unsecured base salary that Garoppolo owes this season, he’ll get $6.5 million in fully guaranteed base pay, $500,000 in list bonuses and a chance to earn nearly $9 million in playtime bonuses.

Garoppolo earned $350,000 in rewards Sunday for playing at least 25% of the picks and winning the game for the Niners.

Now he could have a chance to take on a more important role depending on how long Lance was injured. It didn’t take Garoppolo long to get into shape, throwing a 38-yard TD pass to Ross Dwelley on his first full possession.

Lance was 2 for 3 for 30 yards and had three moves for 13 yards before leaving the game. This is the second time Lance has been hurt in a brief stint in the NFL. He injured his knee after his first game last season against Arizona when Garoppolo was injured.

Lance has carried the ball 47 times in less than 15 quarters as the main midfielder in the past two seasons.

“Do you guys watch the other teams in this league? Buffalo does that all the time with the quarterback,” Shanahan said of Josh Allen. “It’s a normal game. It’s part of football and it’s a pity that he injured his ankle. It’s very casual play.”
