“One hypothesis for TAR formation is that larger grains such as pebbles roll over smaller ripples; the fine dust then settles into the cracks, causing the pebbles to ‘swell’, making the tar larger than the typical ripples,” the statement added.
A closer look at the photo provides another layer of mystery, according to the university. Scientists have discovered a “network of ancient broken channels” that may have formed as a result of water or lava.
